The primary yardstick to measure the growth of any industry is the profit and loss account and similarly to gauge the performance of a film it is important to know how much money was put in and how much it managed to collect.

Over several decades, Tamil cinema producers have shied away from releasing the true profit or loss of a film due to various reasons. The most obvious one is that if they reveal their profits they have to pay income tax. Similarly, they also have to hide their losses so as not to hurt a big hero involved. This practice has to a large extent hindered the growth of Tamil cinema. Heroes demand and get exorbitant remunerations because of these falsified collection figures. Fans also have to suffer mediocre films because there is a misleading belief that mediocrity is good and make huge profits.

Now that demonetization is in force and there is no point in hiding the profits, producers may be able to reveal the true profits or losses made by a film that could alter the way the industry functions and pave way for a better future.
