Box Office pundits are crying hoarse that even big star films released recently get a good opening but fail to sustain and incur losses. Out of the 200 odd films released last year a mere dozen have reported profits and one cannot blame the content as 2017 saw many meaningful films release.  It is very clear that fans take care of the first couple of days and then its left for the common audiences to decide the fate of the film.

The common audiences are very clear that they will not spend money on all and sundry and though they may patronise a top hero's bad film they would hesitate to do so for a good film of the new face unless the buzz is so strong that they have to watch it.  Starting from the MGR-Sivaji era right up to the Rajini-Kamal era heroes such as Jayshankar, Gemini Ganesan, Muthuraman and co followed by Prabhu, Karthick, Sathyaraj, Vijayakanth, Sarathkumar, Arjun and Prashanth, Vijay, Ajith starred in many projects and atleast two to three of their films hit the screens in a year.  That would mean a minimum of thirty films from the top heroes which would attract the audiences to the theaters.

Now the scenario has changed with Ajith, Vijay, Suriya, Vikram and others content to do one film a year which if delayed becomes one every eitghteen months or so.  Then when you put together the tope heroes Karthi, Sivakarthikeyan, Dhanush, Simbu, Jayam Ravi and others the total releases of films that would attract the audience to the theaters for sure numbers only about a dozen in a year.

Instead of blaming the audiences, the top heroes of Kollywood should star in more films in the ratio of two commercial films to one meaningful cinema to ensure that the audiences are always tempted to go to the theaters instead of only on a festival day.  Vijay Sethupathi is one hero who does it starring in multiple movies with variety of roles and is striking gold at the box office as well as in the minds of the audiences.  Time for Kollywood heroes to look beyond their comfort zone to pull the struggling industry out of the doldrums.
