Straight Talk - Proof that the script is more important than director's reputation

Hollywood for the past several decades has always followed the strict policy of going to shoot only after the screenplay has been rewritten several times and all concerned were satisfied. In recent years Bollywood too has caught on with this all important discipline and have managed to come out with more quality films.
Tamil cinema after the 80s has always depended on the box office muscle of the leading men and the reputations of the directors and has seldom given importance to the written words that are the blueprint for a quality film. In the year 2017, Mani Ratnam`s Kaatru Veliyidai`, Raghavan`s Kadamban` and most recently Ezhil`s Saravanan Irukka Bayamen` released to much fanfare because their previous films OK Kanmani`, Manja Pai` and Velaiyunnu Vanthutta Vellaikaran` respectively were huge hits. All three films failed to meet the expectations of their target audiences because they lacked a good screenplay and their director`s reputations could not salvage them. Comparatively Adhe Kangal`, Kuttram 23`, Maanagaram`,'Pa Paandi', 8 Thottakal` and to a certain extent Kavan` and Sivalinga` did not have expectations of the maker`s reputations but won on the strength of good scripts and executions.
Time for Kollywood to respect writers and a fully developed script which will produce better films and help in cutting down the industry`s losses to a great extent. The importance of this realization is equal to the fight to eradicate piracy.
