Director S.S. Rajamouli during the promotions of 'Baahubali - The Beginning' a couple of years back conceded that his film became big only after he decided to make the Tamil version with perfect lip sync. The box office collections in the US, UK, Singapore, Canada and Malaysia among others, to clearly indicate that the Tamil version has an edge over the Telugu and Hindi versions. Isn't it time for filmmakers from Kollywood to wake up to the fact that they should capitalize on this situation.
Tamil cinema during its baby steps relied on the rich Tamil heritage and literature to make its mark and then the culture was celebrated by such pillars like C.N. Anna Durai, Kalaigniar M Karunanidhi, A.P. Nagarajan, B. R. Banthulu, MGR, SSR, Sivaji Ganesan and countless others. Tamil has its own treasure trove of epics and great men and women of the past whose stories can leave the audiences awestruck. The lives of poets like Thiruvalluvar, Avvaiyar, Elango Adigal, Manimegalai etc.. or the seven generous philanthropic kings would spin hours and hours of entertainment. Writers like Kalki and Chandilyan have left us 'Ponniyin Selvan' and 'Kadal Pura' and scores of others.
Can we really stay satisfied with Sundar C's 'Sangamithra' whose lead casting itself makes it clear it has very little to do with Tamil culture. On the other hand the greats from the older generation like Kamal Haasan, Vairamuthu, Rajinikanth, Bharathiraja, Balakumaran and others who love and cherish Tamil literature can now do something to bring them to life on celluloid. They can no longer blame the market can they?
