The GST and the LBET drama that saw theaters in Tamil Nadu shut for four consecutive days for the first time in history left the industry shaken and a few films that were critically acclaimed like Ivan Thanthiran' unfortunately had to bear the brunt. The hike in the ticket prices by 28 percent discouraged moviegoers from visiting their most favorite haunts for a couple of weeks encouraging doomsayers to predict that only a Thala Ajith can rescue theater owners in mid August when his Vivegam' will release.
The 21st of July saw Vikram Vedha' and Meesaya Murukku' hit the screens and the very first shows of both signalled superhits. By destiny or design these two movies catered to a very divided audience. The first mentioned has powerhouse performances from Vijay Sethupathi and Madhavan and the cerebral content created by Pushkar and Gayathri was more for the men with family and youth joining in as the days went by. On the other hand Hip Hop Tamizha Aadhi's film unabashedly lured the youth with a campus story with strong ingredients of the believe- in- yourself routine and family sentiments. Definitely not a masterpiece by any means the film, however connected to its target group and they have made it work in a big way.
Like the fuel hikes or the tomato prices skyrocketing the common man feels the pinch for a few days and even decides to take a bus or use tamarind. Eventually he decides that he will enjoy his bike and the "thakkali saadham" whatever price he may have to pay. Similarly the movie patron stayed away from theaters for a few days, but when the right content arrived, he went along with his family to enjoy his primary source of entertainment. But the same will not stand good for average or bad content from which he will definitely stay away from now on. The pressure is now fully on the creative talents of the film industry to come up with better films to continue to draw the audiences to the theaters .
