Steep increase in price of egg may 'axe' it from nutritious meal scheme

It is reported that the steep and unprecedented increase in the prices of egg in recent times might result in egg taken off from the menu served in Schools across the State under the ‘chief-minister’s nutritious meal scheme’, one of the proud projects of the late chief-minister J. Jayalalithaa.

In order to make students energetic and nutritious, each student is served egg every day as part of the nutritious meal scheme in Schools. Students from Anganwadi to Class X are given at least five eggs per week. Private egg-supplying contractors are reportedly selling 3 crore eggs per week to the Govt. for serving egg at Schools.

So far, eggs were provided to schools @ Rs.4.35 but the steep increase made this price go up by 75 paise to Rs.5.10, forcing suppliers to continue to supply eggs at old cost.

As a result, it is now expected that either less number of eggs per week would be provided to students during serving of nutritious meal or egg would be taken off the menu for a few days till the price of eggs are regularized.
