In addition, also in attendance were Kathleen Kennedy and Kiri Hart, head of Story Group who were introduced onto the stage by Pablo Hidalgo of the Lucasfilm Story Group. In their discussion, they announced that the stand-alone films will be from now officially be referred to as the "Star Wars Anthology Films."
After the 'Star Wars Anthology Films' reference announcement was made, Gareth Edwards, director of the first 'Star Wars' Anthology Film, 'Rogue One' joined the panel and admitted to crying during the trailer reveal of the seventh installment of the 'Star Wars' franchise, 'The Force Awakens'.
Shortly after the discussion, an exclusive teaser was shown with the text, "December 2016" signifying the release of 'Rogue One' and then with Obi-Wan Kenobi's voice-over from the first 'Star Wars' film, 'A New Hope. Sir Alec Guinnes portrayed portrayed Obi-Wan and the voice-over ran over the trailer went something like this: "For more than a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the old republic. Before the dark times."
The footage shown had a forested planet with a TIE fighter flying high in the sky above birds and mountainous terrain and the camera pans to sky slowly and in the distant background, the Death Star is there. And finally, as the teaser ends, a loud, incoherent chatter over a com, and then the logo: "Rogue One: Star Wars Anthology"
The film's official synopsis was then announced after the teaser was shown. The synopsis for 'Rogue One' is as follows:
"A rogue band of resistance fighters unite for a mission to steal the Death Star plans and bring a new hope to the galaxy."
Edwards then confirmed that 'Rogue One' will take place after 'Star Wars: Episode III' and before 'Star Wars: Episode IV' and that it will be "closer to Episode IV."
Gareth then went on to state that 'Rogue One' will be the first 'Star Wars' film to not feature Jedi since their absence is part of the storytelling. The idea is to tell the story of a regular group of people without any magical powers whose quest lies in making their world better. He finally concluded saying this new path will bring a new interesting angle to the massive 'Star Wars' franchise.
