Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin has demanded convening of an ‘extra-ordinary session’ of the State Legislative Assembly to discuss the raging Cauvery issue.

Stalin has penned a letter to chief-minister Edapadi K. Palaniswami in this regard. “Last Friday’s New Delhi meeting convened by the Centre involving representatives of four State Governments was only an eye-wash; the meeting was held only to achieve electoral gains for the BJP ahead of the upcoming Assembly polls in Karnataka.

“When Tamil Nadu’s representatives wanted to meet Prime Minister, the Centre said that the issue could be discussed with Union Water Resources Minister; even that didn’t occur as the meeting was convened only by Water Resources Secretary, thus depriving Tamil Nadu of its democratic right to put its views across.  It is apparent that Centre didn’t want to meet Tamil Nadu’s representatives to discuss the issue.

“It is anti-democratic on the part of the BJP-led Centre to do so. Water Resources Secretary had wrongly stated at the above-meeting that the Supreme Court didn’t talk about constituting a Cauvery Management Board. Did Tamil Nadu’s representatives oppose his talk at the meeting?  I demand immediate convening of a special Assembly session to discuss the issue and put pressure on the Centre,” Stalin’s letter said.
