During a public event, Thaman, while commenting on the singer's performance, said, "That girl is singing for the first time... bless her with a chappal," which shocked the audience.

Realizing the gravity of his statement, Thaman immediately apologized on stage, admitting that he was wrong to use the term "chappal." Thaman was saying, "Chappatlu" but his tongue rolled and he said, Chappal.
