Union sports minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore has welcomed the government's decision to deploy CBI to investigate the corruption allegations leveled against officials of the sports department. The minister had said that the real solution for this can only be investigating, and mere transfer of officials would not have helped.
CBI has arrested SK Sharma, the director of sports authority of India, Supervisor Lalit Jolly, VK Sharma the UDC, Mandeep Ahuja and Yunis, a private contractor and his employee respectively, and Harinder Prasad, the accounts officer, with the complaint on them being pending bills of 19 lakhs demanding a 3% commission.
Speaking on these arrests, Rathore said that the arrest is the right action, as transferring the officials would only be a coverup, and the government has handed over the case to CBI due to the public expectation of a fair probe. The former Olympics medallist also said that the sports ministry aims to be fair and transparent. The raids at SAI and the arrests happened following a complaint by Director General Neelam Kapur, who had received complaints 6 months back, and was told by the minister to take it to CBI.
