Thala Ajith who is presently acting in his 57th film has an actor made his debut as the lead hero in the year 1993. The first to hit the screens with him playing the lead role is the Tamil flick 'Amaravathi' directed by Selva. The film released on 28 May 1993 and turned out to be a box office hit.

Within two months Ajith's Telugu debut 'Prema Pusthakam' released on 16 July 1993. The Telugu film released after facing a lot of problems during the production and hence it should be considered as the first film of Ajith Kumar as a hero. This film was later dubbed in Tamil as 'Kadhal Puthagam' and released in 1997.

23 years later, in a recent interview, veteran singer S.P.Balasubramaniam has revealed about his role in Ajith getting his first film offer

As we all know SPB is an equally or rather more popular and sought after singer in Tollywood. He is also a popular voice actor in Telugu films. Hence he has a good friendship and rapport with many Telugu film directors and production houses.

One among them is producer Gollapudi Maruthi Rao who was planning a film to launch his son Gollapudi Srinivas as a director. He had asked SPB to suggest a guy who is good looking and manly but he should not come under the chocolate boy mould.

The legendary singer immediately he got reminded of Ajith who was his son SPB Charan's class mate and suggested his name to the producer.

That's how Ajith landed the offer that only one in a million will get. He proved to be a worthy selection and the rest is history.

Roa wrote the film and also completed the film as the director, due to the unfortunate demise of his son while the film was under production. He went on to win the Nandi Award for the Best Screenplay.

SPB went on to render many super hit and evergreen songs for Ajith, such as 'Nalam nalam ariya aaval' (Kadhal Kottai), 'Unai paartha pinbu naan' (Kadhal Mannan), 'Satham illadha thanimai ketten' (Amarkkalam) and many others.

'Prema Pusthakam' is the first and only direct Telugu film of Ajith.
