Veteran actress Sowcar Janaki, who carved a special place for herself in South Indian cinema with her versatile performances, has passed away at the age of 94. The veteran actress breathed her last at 1:59 PM on Friday in Chennai, according to reports.
Janaki had been battling age-related health complications and was receiving treatment in the ICU of a private hospital. She had reportedly been unwell for some time before her health condition worsened.
Her death brings an end to a remarkable cinematic journey that lasted more than 70 years, during which she acted in over 400 films across Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam.
Born Sankaramanchi Janaki on December 12, 1931, in Rajahmundry, she was the younger sister of popular actress Krishna Kumari. Janaki developed a passion for performing arts at an early age and began her career by appearing in stage plays.
She made her silver-screen debut in 1949 with ‘Raksha Rekha’. However, it was the 1950 Telugu film ‘Shavukaru’ that brought her widespread recognition. The film also gave her the name by which she would be known to generations of audiences — Sowcar Janaki.
Over the years, Sowcar Janaki became known for her ability to portray a wide variety of characters. From strong-willed women to emotionally layered family roles, she brought remarkable naturalness and depth to her performances.
She worked extensively in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam cinema and shared the screen with several leading stars and filmmakers of different generations.
Her notable Telugu films include ‘Kanyasulkam’, ‘Rojulu Marayi’, ‘Jayam Manade’, ‘Doctor Chakravarthy’, ‘Todikodallu’, ‘Samsaram Oka Chadarangam’ and ‘Geethanjali’.
Sowcar Janaki’s artistic journey was not limited to films. She also made significant contributions to theatre and radio, demonstrating her versatility as a performer.
Her longevity in the entertainment industry was particularly remarkable, as she continued to remain associated with cinema even after completing several decades as an actress.
In recognition of her contribution to Indian arts and cinema, the Government of India conferred the Padma Shri on Sowcar Janaki in 2022.
She continued to make occasional appearances in films in her later years. Her last film appearance was in ‘Anni Manchi Sakunamule’.
Sowcar Janaki’s career stands as a testament to the enduring power of talent and dedication. From the early years of Telugu cinema to contemporary films, she remained a familiar and respected presence on screen.
With her passing, an important chapter in the history of South Indian cinema has come to an end. Sowcar Janaki leaves behind more than 400 films, countless memorable characters and a legacy that will continue to be remembered by generations of movie lovers.
