Chennai Super Kings batsman and former South African captain Faf du Plessis has revealed that he and his wife received death threats after South Africa lost to New Zealand in the 2011 World Cup quarterfinal.
South Africa was knocked out of the World Cup tournament after losing the quarterfinal match to New Zealand by 49 runs at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka. I received death threats after that (match). My wife received death threats. We turned on social media and we were blown away. It became very personal. There were some very offensive things said that I won't repeat, Faf du Plessis was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. du Plessis came in to bat when the South African team was reduced to 121 - 4. The match soon saw the wicket of AB de Villiers, who got runout at the keeper's end, while du Plessis' 36 was not sufficient for the side to win the game.
Faf du Plessis added, It makes you introverted towards people and you put a shield up. All players go through this and it forces us to keep our circles very small. It's why I've worked so hard on creating a safe space within our camp. The CSK batsman recently returned to South Africa after the BCCI suspended the 14th edition of IPL owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.
