Joe Jonas filed for divorce from Sophie Turner on Sept. 5. Just 16 days later, Sophie sued Joe over custody of their two children, 3-year-old Willa and a 1-year-old daughter whose name remains undisclosed, claiming "wrongful retention."
The breakdown of their marriage didn't occur overnight. In December, they jointly decided to search for a "forever home" in the U.K. The couple spent the next several months touring properties in England to make this vision a reality.
They identified a property in Henley on Thames, England, and entered into a contract to purchase it, with a completion date set for December 2, 2023. They intended to spend Christmas 2023 in their new English home.
Before relocating permanently to England in April 2023, their careers had kept them constantly on the move. After briefly living in Miami, they sold their $15 million home there in August, confirming their desire to raise their children in England.
Joe left for an international tour in August, taking their children with him due to Sophie's intense filming schedule. The plan was for Sophie to join them in the U.S. in September, after completing her filming.
However, their marriage took an unexpected turn. On Joe's 34th birthday, the couple had an undisclosed argument. Just 21 days later, Joe filed for divorce in Miami, Florida.
Sophie refuted Joe's claim that she learned about the divorce through the media. She initiated legal action to have their children returned to England, invoking international law in her case.
Joe's representative responded, stating that Sophie was aware of his intent to file for divorce, and he stressed his desire for shared parenting and the children's American citizenship.
Their divorce is now at the center of a complex custody dispute, with both parties presenting their sides of the story.
