These days so many films are being churned out in Kollywood that it becomes tough to keep a count, especially of the number of quality movies. In this era of plenty only a few ventures go on to capture the audience's attention while several sink without a trace.

In this backdrop comes 'Sooriya Nagaram' that is an offering sans any novelty and solely harps on the caste factor, that most often than not mars the prospects of couples in love.

The story or whatever that forms the movie is about a boy and a girl from two different castes who fall in love. The girl's father, who is the chieftain of his community, as would most parents, opposes the affair.

The couple decides to elope and their subsequent travails form the crux of this rather crass presentation. Veteran director R V Udhayakumar dons a character with negative shade and does walk away with some of the praise.

Director M Chellamuthu it must be said has attempted something different in the narration but the preachy tone of the movie does hurt.

The story goes like this: Vetrivel (Rahul Ravindran) falls for Tamilselvi (Meera Nandan), daughter of Kathirvel (R V Udhayakumar), who is the leader of a powerful community in Madurai.

Even as Kathirvel attempts to marry off his daughter to one of his relatives, the couple decides to elope. However, the powerful caste leader sniffs their plans and along with his men stops them dead in their tracks. Do they get together in the end forms the rest.

Rahul does make a good fist of his role, while Meera Nandan doesn't do too badly. Senthil, 'Parotta' Suri, veteran S N Lakshmi (who passed away recently) and 'Anjathey' Sridhar are in the cast. Music by Fen Viallee is passable, and he scores good marks in 'Unnai pirivenaa...'.

On the whole, there is not much to write home about as far as 'Sooriya Nagaram' is concerned.
