Suriya – Aparna Balamurali starrer Soorarai Pottru is all set to be remade in Bollywood. The film was inspired by the book Simply Fly: A Deccan Odyssey by G. R. Gopinath. It was released in Amazon during the pandemic and was well received by the audience. According to reports, Sudha Kongara will be directing the Hindi version of the film and the other cast are yet to be announced.
In a statement, Suriya said, “The love and appreciation that was showered on Soorarai Pottru was unprecedented. From the minute I heard this story I felt this has to be a pan India film because the soul of it was such. It gives me immense pleasure to partner with Abundantia Entertainment, who have always made quality content, to tell the inspiring story of Captain Gopinath in Hindi.”
Director Sudha Kongara added, “I was instantly drawn to the story of Soorarai Pottru, the story of Captain Gopinath, an adventurous maverick and an inspiring entrepreneur who epitomised the New India of the 90s. I’m grateful for all the love we have received so far and look forward to telling this unique and amazing story in Hindi. I hope this official Hindi remake also gets the same love as the original”.
The film will be produced by Suriya’s 2D Entertainment, and Vikram Malhotra’s Abundantia Entertainment. Soorarai Potru was selected as one among ten Indian films to be screened under the Best Foreign Film category at the 78th Golden Globe Awards. It is currently the third highest rated film on IMDb and has a rating of 9.1, only behind The Shawshank Redemption (1994) and The Godfather (1972).
