'Morbius' is an upcoming Hollywood film based on Marvel's super-human antihero character of the same name. In association with Marvel Entertainment, it is produced by Columbia Pictures and distributed by Sony Pictures. It is the third film in Sony's Spider-Man universe after the studio gave the character to MCU.
Doctor Michael Morbius becomes a vampire after attempting to cure himself of a rare blood disease. The film is directed by Daniel Espinosa, written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, and stars Jared Leto as Michael Morbius alongside Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson. Morbius will release on January 28, 2022.
The trailer of Morbius was dropped by the studios yesterday. The three-minute-long video offers a wide view of the world of this vampire antihero who cannot decide where to draw the line between hero and villain. The character is highly remindful of Spider-Man's other supervillain Venom. The promo ends with Jared Leto sarcastically introducing himself as, “I am Venom.” In the likes of Sony's Venom and Venom: Let there be Carnage, Morbius also do have several Spider-Man references to offer the fans.
The film additionally features Michael Keaton reprising his role as Adrian Toomes / Vulture from the MCU film Spider-Man: Homecoming. And we get a peek at a shot where Michael walks beside a wall that has the web slinger's poster and a graffiti reading 'Murderer' on it. Judging by the orange jumpsuit, Morbius will find himself in prison at some point and eventually breaks out, and since Michael Keaton’s wearing the same kind of white jumpsuit he had on in the Homecoming mid-credits scene, it’ll be during this portion of the movie he and Jared Leto cross paths.
And in another shot in the Morbius featurette, Michael Morbius looking at a newspaper headline that celebrates his capture for a "Vampire Murder." The newspaper is 'Daily Bugle' which is a usual element of the Spider-Man universe. The banner at the top of the paper contains: "RHINO ON THE LOOSE: ZOO HOAX FOOLS US ALL," which confirms the existence of classic Spider-Man supervillain who was also teased in Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Also, the banner reads, "BLACK CAT: FRIEND OR FOE?" a cat-burglar who became Spider-Man's romantic interest and fought with Avengers once in the comics. Sony is planning to bring up the Black Cat in its Spider-Man universe. On the other hand, the post-credit scene of Venom 2 glimpses a drastic change in the environment around Tom Hardy and also Daily Bugle appears to be a digital medium that hints at the MCU's current Spider-Man verse. Fan theories back that Hardy and Venom are shifted to the No Way Home multiverse in the final scene and they will be present in the upcoming film.
