The Hijab controversy which originated few days back in Karnataka has spiralled out of control. The matter has sparked some protests and several Bollywood celebs have also shared their opinion on the whole affair. Actress Sonam Kapoor also took to her Instagram stories to share a post which pointed out the hypocrisy of accepting Sikh turban while rejecting Hijab.
The post had a pictures of a turban clad man and a hijab clad woman with the caption, "Turban can be a choice, but Hijab can’t?” Soon after this post, Sonam faced huge backlash from people who thought that her comparison was unfair and uncalled for. Manjinder Singh Sirsa shared Sonam's story on his tweet and wrote, "Dastar or “Dast-e-Yar” means“the hand of God”. It is not a choice but a blessing of Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji & an integral part of Sikhs’ identity. Comparing Dastar & Hijab are unjustified & unwanted in this context @sonamkapoor.”
After Sirsa's tweet, several netizens also criticised Sonam. One of them wrote, "SonamKapoor doesn’t need an explanation. She just does paid tweets for issues she has no idea about. Don’t bother teaching her. Burqa was, is and will always be a security concern because it is hard for the person to be identified and the women are unwilling to unveil too.”
Another tweet read, “’If turban can be a choice, then why not hijab’-CLONE Sonam Kapoor! You synthetic clone don’t know that turban is ‘article of faith’ of Sikhs and granted by Constitution of India. Hijab is Geo-cultural attire!!”
