Ajay Devgan is back with a remake ‘Son of Sardar’ (SOS) and this time it’s the Telugu blockbuster “Maryada Ramanna” directed by S.S Rajamouli (Naan-E/Makhee fame), which in itself was adapted from an old Hollywood silent film ‘Our Hospitality’. Distributed by Viacom 18 and Eros, SOS is produced by Ajay Devgn’s banner and directed by Ashwini Dhir (3rd film after Athiti Tum Kab Jaoge and One Two Three). Can Ajay repeat the magic of ‘Singham’ with SOS?

The film starts with an explosive introduction of Ajay Devgn (as Jaswinder / Jassi) riding 2 horses by standing on them (one leg on each) and then a fight sequence defying all laws of science. To make it even more racier, Salman Khan (guest appearance) enters the scene and helps him. Jaswinder is in London and receives a letter asking him to go back to India to sell a piece of his land which belonged to his parents. But there is a catch, their family feud with the family of Ranvijay Singh (Sanjay Dutt), who is waiting to kill Jaswinder the moment he enters the village. Ranvijay Singh has been waiting for this opportunity for many years and vowed not to marry Pammi (Juhi Chawla) until he kills Jaswinder. (His brothers have vowed not to have ice cream and cola.... I mean it).

Jassi meets Sukhmeet (Sonakshi) on his way back to the village and as you rightly guessed, she is the sister of Billu Paaji. Without knowing Jaswinder’s identity, Ranvijay Singh and his family takes Jassi to their home and treats him. Later, they realize his identity but as per their customs they don’t hurt anyone inside their house and so they wait for him to get out of the house. Meanwhile Jaswinder also comes to know that this is the family waiting to kill him and tries his luck in not leaving the house. This leads to several hilarious situations and some suspense as well until interval. But after that the film drags without any twist or interesting sequences. And we all know what happens in such a film – happy ending right? With some more chases and fight sequences the film ends with the Pom Pom song.

The film is totally dependent of Ajay Devgn and he delivers his job doing a bit of everything – romance, comedy and fight sequences. But we all love to see him in a serious role right? And yes wherever there is an opportunity for that, he excels there as well. Sonakshi looks good and also dances well. Except for the long introduction scene between Ajay and her in the train, (which was interesting), she has nothing much to do. Sanjay Dutt looks very old though suitable for the role.

Technically, there is not much to tell about the film. The songs were Ok and background score (Sandeep Chowta) sounded repetitive after some time. On the negative side, the fights were exaggerated. He throws his turban, which straps on to the neck of a guy and then swings him around to tie his turban. In another fight sequence when he lands on the ground, you can see bricks flying from beneath (bricks from the floor?) – these are just few examples. In the name of copying from South Indian films, Bollywood is going a bit extra and making things look brainless. There are some unwanted scenes between Sanjay Dutt and Juhi Chawla (his unmarried wife) which were supposed to be funny and then there are these so called “gundas without brains” alongside Sanjay Dutt to add more laughter (or irritation). Though I saw some young crowd enjoying these.

Overall ‘Son Of Sardar’ might not be able to repeat the success of ‘Maryada Ramanna’ but is definitely a time pass film which you can enjoy in parts if you forget logics.
