Former world No. 1 John McEnroe has refused to apologise to top player Serena Williams after she demanded respect for being compared to men. He has asked for a men-versus-women match as a solution.

While promoting his latest book, John McEnroe had commented that Serena Williams was undoubtedly the best female player but that she would rank at No. 700 in comparison to men.

Serena Williams, who had won the Australian Open while pregnant and who is taking a pregnancy break, had asked to be kept out of his factually incorrect` comments and demanded respect.

McEnroe felt no remorse and said that a match where "the men and women play together" would put an end to any doubt.

Williams is expected to be back on court by January 2018.
