Amrutha C (33), a software engineer from Bengaluru, has been arrested by the police for stabbing her mother Nirmala (52) to death on February 2. Her boyfriend Sridhar Rao, who works as a techie for an IT company in Bengaluru's Whitefield, has also been taken into custody.
In the wee hours of Feb 2, Amrutha stabbed her mother with a kitchen knife in their house. When her younger brother Harish walked into the kitchen, she stabbed him too. Soon after doing this, Amrutha fled from her house and reached her boyfriend, who was waiting for her near the house on a bike. They both directly went to the international airport, took a flight to Andaman and stayed there until their arrest yesterday by the Port Blair police.
Amrutha's brother Harish didn't succumb to injuries. He survived the attack and called up his relatives for help. He told the police what happened on the fateful day. The police traced Amrutha and Sridhar Rao through SIM network.
As per Amrutha's account, she has been very depressed that their family has been mired in huge debts. Back in 2012, her father was suffering from lung cancer, to treat which Rs 4 lakh was borrowed. With compounding interest, the debt is now Rs 18 lakh.
The police suspect that the original plan of Amrutha was to kill both her mother and brother and commit suicide later. However, she wanted to spend her final days with her boyfriend before killing herself.
The police themselves are confused. They have said that the cause of the crime is entirely psychological.
