Tamil films that made a Global imprint in 2015

The bouquet of Tamil films of 2015 contains blockbuster hit films. Critically acclaimed blockbusters, films that were critically acclaimed as well as commercial successful and critically acclaimed films that failed to make the desired effect in the box office. While such a mixture follows the usual annual pattern in Kollywood, there is a striking feature added this year. More number of Tamil films has reached the global audience before or after their theatrical release and has impressed the international audience too. A select few of them even won awards in the international and national level before hitting the local audience.

Let's take a look at those films that made our Tamil Cinema proud in Global film circuits and helped our industry make a global impact beyond box office revenues.

Kaaka Muttai

This film jointly produced by Dhanush and Vetrimaran started or at least popularised the trend of taking the film to international audience and film buffs before bringing it for the taste of local audience. Director Manikandan's debut venture that conveyed the impact of globalisation in developing and underdeveloped countries through a story of two slum kids' endeavour to afford a pizza received huge accolades from the global audience.

Kaaka Muttai was first screened in Toronto International Film Festival and then in Rome Film Festival, Dubai International Film Festival and Brisbane Asia Pacific Film Festival in 2014. In the year 2015 the film was screened in Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles and the Gold Coast Film Festival before its theatrical release. The film had also won the National award for the Best Children's Film of 2014 much before its release.

In the box-office 'Kaaka Muttai' turned out to be a blockbuster.

Kutram Kadidhal

This is another National award winner that took the festival route before local release. The film that spoke about corporal punishment in schools was screened in Zimbabwe International Film Festival, International Film Festival of India and Mumbai Film Festival before its theatrical release. It had also won the National award for Best Tamil Feature Film of 2014 before its theatrical release.

Upon its theatrical release in mid 2015, the film was unanimously hailed by critics and social media users. The director claimed that the film had recovered its cost at the box office and was profitable.

Uttama Villain

This film hailed as Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan's yet another realistic attempt by the critics failed to make any wonders at the box office. But Kamal proved yet again that he is the king of awards. The film about an superstar on the verge of death, produced by Lingusamy and directed by Ramesh Aravind with Kamal penning the script was screened in the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival long after its short run at the box office The film won the awards for Best Film, Best Actor (Kamal Haasan), Best Original Score), Best Sound Design. The film contested in the Russian International Film Festival and won Best Music Award that went to the film's music director Ghibran.

Kirumi

This film traced the risky life of a police informer. The story was written by Manikandan of 'Kaaka Muttai' while debutant Anu Charan wrote the screenplay and directed the film. The film received critical acclaimed for its realistic script and neat and engaging execution but failed to make any wonders at the box office. The film was screened in Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival and Mumbai Film Festival.

Orange Mittai

Vijay Sethupathi, the mainstream commercial hero with a passion for versatile roles opted for an offbeat subject for his debut production and that's how 'Orange Mittai' emerged. The film in which Vijay Sethupathi played the role of a 55 year isolated and adamant old man protagonist was directed by Biju Vishawanath. The film was critically acclaimed but did not fetch any commercial fortunes.

Vijay Sethupathi had to be content with the being screened in the 20th Busan International Film Festival.

Visaranai

After the stupendous success of 'Kaaka Muttai', Vetrimaran and Dhanush opted for the festival route for their next production 'Visaranai'. The National award winning filmmaker Vetrimaran has directed this film based on a Tamil novel 'Lockup' The film is a hard hitting take on custodial torture.

'Visaranai' became the first Tamil film to be screened under the competitive category of Venice International Film Festival and also won the Cinema for Human Rights Award.

The film was also screened in Mumbai International Film Festival and received unanimous praise from everyone who watched the film.

The film starring Dinesh, Anandhi and Samuthirakani among others will be hitting the screens for the local audience on January 29, 2016.

Kutramey Dhandanai

This is the second directorial of Manikandan after 'Kaaka Muttai'. The film has been produced by actor Vidharth who also plays the lead role in the film along with Pooja Devaria and Aishwarya Rajesh. This would be a film without songs and has Isaignani Ilaiyaraja's background score.
