Vijay's films have always been formulaic. But he has been successful. So you can't question his approach. Similarly, the songs in his films too have a formula to them. Full of robust beats and mass rhythms. They will be interspersed with a couple of slow romantic songs. Sivakasi is no different from this, as Srikanth Deva has come up with a mix of fast and soft numbers. The usual list of Shankar Mahadevan, Vasundhara Dass, Udit Narayan, known for fast songs, have rendered one song each.
Srikanth Deva has understood what Vijay and his fans need. He has provided that.
Director Perarasu has himself penned the lyrics for all the six numbers.
Vaada Vaada (Shankar Mahadevan)
Perhaps this is intro song of the hero in the movie. And suitably it is high-pitched and high-decibel with fast music. It has become a routine to have such weighted rhythms and heavy instruments for such mass songs. As usual, Shankar Mahadevan does his job well. Nothing extraordinary. But may top the charts quickly. Yet, a year later you would not remember it.
Edhu Enna (Harish Raghavendra, Uma Ramanan)
After a long gap, one gets to hear Uma Ramanan. In the company of Harish Raghavendra, this veteran singer proves her worth rendering this soft number inspired by awe stern music well. Srikanth Deva's orchestration is a special highlight of the song. This romantic number sticks to hearts of the listeners at the first instance itself. There is a sheen to the number thanks to Perarasu's good lyrics backed by good instrumentation. Harish Raghavendra is also in his elements.
Kodambakkam Area (Tippu,Shoba Chandrasekaran)
Shoba Chandrasekaran, actor Vijay's mother, has the habit of chipping in with a song in every film of his son. A typical'dappanguthu number' this, with Shoba's husky voice, sets the right environment. It is an item number in the movie with Nayantra appearing on screen. Tippu has nothing much to do while Shoba corners all glory.
Deepavali Deepavali (KK, Vasundhara Das)
Seemingly an inspiration of Ilayaraja's rock numbers of late 1980s, Srikanth Deva has come up with this fast tune where the fusion of western and Tamil folk music has jelled well. The intelligent use of drums and the guitar makes the song more interesting to listen to. However KK seems completely lost in this song, while Vasundhara Das as usual dazzles.
Ada Ennatha Solvenungo (Udit Narayanan, Anuradha Sriram)
What happens when an energetic Anuradha Sriram and vibrant Udit Natrayan come together for a song? A high-octane peppy number is the end result. Just the right tonic for the front-benchers. The downside is that the beats dominate more than anything else. But who will complain as everone will be dancing in the aisle.
Enn Theivathukkei (Mukesh) An emotional number dealing with mother-son bondage. A typical pathos song with the newcomer Mukesh rendering it. But the song is flat and insipid. It doesn't strike a chord --- inside your heart, that is.
Sivakasi, in a sense, like a cracker. All dazzle and fun while listening to.
