Even after 26 years since her untimely death by suicide, Silk Smitha remains an enigma. Born Vijalakshmi in a small village in Andhra Pradesh she migrated to Chennai after a failed marriage in her teens.
The dusky beauty realized before her twenties that showbiz is a bed of thorns and she endured humiliation and exploitations of all kinds before achieving stardom after her debut in 'Vandichakkram'. During the eighties there was a time when no film was complete without an item dance of Silk Smitha including the legends Sivaji Ganesan, Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth.
Silk the dream girl of millions of Indians at that time was herself on a constant search for true love which she never found. On September 23, 1996, at the age of 35 she was found dead hanging in her apartment apparently heartbroken due to yet another love failure.
In 2011, popular Bollywood producer Ekta Kapoor bankrolled the biopic of the sexy actress titled 'The Dirty Picture'. Vidya Balan played the role of Silk Smitha and won a Best Actress National Award for the role. Now plans are on for sequel to the film titled 'The Dirty Picture 2'.
After Vidya Balan opted out Kangana Ranaut was offered the picture who also turned it down. Now it is reported in Bollywood media that Tapsee Pannu and Kriti Sanon who have carved a niche for themselves are said to be in talks to play Silk Smitha in 'Dirty Picture'. We have to wait and see which of the two talented girls will grab the enigmatic role.
