Yuvanshankar Raja and Silambarasan always share a good rapport. The duo had teamed up before to render quality musical entertainer in Manmadhan and Vallavan.
Coming together for the third time, the two seems to have decided to provide a different opera from their earlier ventures. Silambattam is an entertaining musical album, which has peppy and groovy music. Energy oozes in all the songs and Yuvan seems to have been inspired by his dad's (Ilayaraja's) works in early 80s.
Yuvan, who started the remix trend in Tamil cinema with Asai Nooru Vagai, has rendered a different remix here. His choice of singers deserves a special mention. Shankar Mahadevan, Silambarasan and Ilayaraja sits very apt for the songs.
The duo which came up with sophisticated songs in the past has now attempted to convince the front-benchers.
Kettavannu Peredutha - Shankar Mahadevan
It is a typical intro song which glorifies the hero. Seemingly, inspired by the tunes of Rajnikanth's opening songs, 'Kettavannu Peredutha Nallavanda' sings paeans of 'Little Superstar'. It has a mix of rural instruments with peppy beats. Yuvan's catchy interludes deserve a special mention.
Shankar Mahadevan's bubbling energy and the grace with which he renders the song deserves a applause.
Nalamdhana - Silambarasan
The song penned by Gangai Amaran begins with English rap. The first line of the song is inspired by yesteryear hit song of Sivaji starrer 'Thillana Mohanambal'.
Yuvan amalgamates the East meet the West in this song. A rap followed by peppy and earthy beat. Watch out for the pacy instrumentation in the song. Certainly would make the front-benchers dance with glee.
Machaan Machaan - Ilayaraja, Bela Shende
Quite a romantic number that has been voiced by Ilayaraj in his touching voice. The music maestro is singing for the first time for Silambarasan. Na. Muthukumar's catchy lyrics have soft music by Yuvanshankar Raja. Resembling Kadhal Valarthen in Manmadhan, the song is melodious and Ilayaraja walks away winning with his hands down.
Vechikava - Silambarasan, Suchitra
Yuvan seems to have grown up listening to the peppy number Vechukava from Nallavanukku Nallavan. Composed by his father, the song has been recreated in this album, where Yuvan has not tried to disturb the original much. He has simply added some peppy beats. Silambarasan has rendered with energy and Suchitra in his company has imbibed the magic from him. The song is fast-paced and raunchy.
Where Is The Party? - Mukesh, Priyadharshini
Penned by Silambarasan himeslf, the song begins with a unique sound. As it progresses, it goes on to become a bridge between the urban and rural youth. It speaks about the party culture, pubs and discotheques in Chennai. Mukesh and Priyadharshini have sung the number with great involvement. Supposed to evoke humor, the song has colloquial lyrics. It would to be interesting to watch how the song would be picturized.
On the whole, it is an enjoyable album. Yuvan has satisfied the appetite of a layman with his music score sans compromising on his style. A good work indeed!
