The Telangana government has allowed shops and establishments to remain open 24 hours a day. Malls and restaurants will now be able to benefit from the new rule. The norm is business-friendly. IT employees who have an active nightlife are thanking the BRS government.
Can employers now officially exploit their staff by making them work extra hours and on Sundays? No, exploitation is not possible. The government has put out some noteworthy conditions which the formal sector must inevitably meet while applying the 24/7 rule.
Week offs and defined working hours have to be followed. Overtime wages have to be paid. If women staff members are asked to attend work at night, their consent must be taken. The adequate safety of women employees must be ensured. Compensatory holidays have to be given.
Transport facilities must be given to women employees working the night shift. The Police Act and the rules notified therein have to be strictly adhered to.
Netizens are lauding the safeguards. "The KCR government doesn't want to antagonize employees. 24/7 work culture favours organizations and investors, not employees. By ensuring adequate safeguards, the government has shown intent in taking care of the interests of employees," a Netizen observed.
