What is it all about
Balaji and Sanjay Gupta on screen shoot out about the first encounter killing of a gangster in Mumbai succeeds in providing John Abraham his finest hours of action on screen and is a crowd pleaser but somehow this ultra-violent mobster flick fails to give any new spin to Sanjay Gupta's credentials as a filmmaker making it somewhat short of befitting booking for its B-town mobster filmsettings like Parinda, Satya, or Balaji's own Once Upon a Time in Mumbai.
The Story
Writers Sanjay Bhatia, Abhijit Deshpande and Sanjay Gupta to an extent based their references to `Hussain Zaidi's book 'Dongri To Dubai' to an extent. Shoot out at Wadala is the story of Mumbai lesser known Hindu gangster Manya Surve played by John whose step brother is a criminal but he wants to follow the right path unavoidable circumstances get him framed in a murder case and is sentenced to life imprisonment. His brother gets killed in prison forcing him to take the wrong path.. he flees from the prison, returns to Mumbai and forms his gang. The cops launch Operation Manya Surve to curb his dominance...
What to look out for
John Abraham's best till date.. Shoot out at Wadala is poised to be a game changer in John's life. He is simply terrific. The urban metro women charmer turns raw, edgy, organic, fierce and entertaining in this film. The biggest reason to sit through Shoot Out at Wadala is John he is simply superb. Sanjay Gupta shows some flashes of his touch inn those detailing of phone and two in ones used during the 80's the setting of this film. Starts of extremely well with the opening frame.
Sanjay Gupta and Milap Zaveri again do a crowd pleasing act.. the dialogues are superb yeah some are below the belt but this is a man world's baby.
Action is the another highlight of this enterprise its raw and highly effective action lovers will have a blast.
The item songs 3 in all are another moment of pleasure for the entertainment hungry souls where B- town most desirable bimbo Priyanka Chopra's Babli Badmaash is electric while Sunny Leone is sexy in Laila and the gorgeous Sophie Chaudhry is sensual in Ala Re ala.
Technicalities are fine Sameer Arya and Sanjay F. Gupta lense work is amazing.
From the supporting cast Anil Kapoor stands out. Tusshar Kapoor is brilliant. He proved it in Shoot out at Lokhandwala and here he takes it forward. Sonu Sood is marvelous. Ronit Roy is fantastic. Shakti Kapoor's son Siddhanth Kapoor impresses. Kangana the only lady in this gang of males makes her presence felt.
What not
The movie losses its grip from time to time. The much awaited moments of conflict between Manya and Zubair, Dilawar are less. There was no need for the college episode where John and Kangana look older.
Fine actor like Manoj Bajpai is wasted. Mahesh Manjrekar doesn't get much scope. Jackie Shroff, Akbar Khan, and Ranjeet are for a scene or two.
The story moves single track Manya Surve and his story... in an effort to make a hero out of this gangster Sanjay Gupta fails to add layers he tries to add some dimension by taking some police voice but that doesn't comes as convincing. John Abraham does vigorous training in prison to get a tough physic but he hardly takes his rivals single handedly and does most of the talking from his mouth...
Conclusion: Shootout at Lokhandwala is high on action and its raw quotient. A crowd pleaser and a potential game changer in the career of John Abraham. Its sheer entertainment.
