A tragedy unfolded at Perry High School in Iowa on Thursday morning, January 4th, as a 17-year-old student named Dylan Butler opened fire, killing one student and injuring five others. Butler then died by suicide, according to authorities.

Among the injured were four students in stable condition and one in critical condition. Principal Dan Marburger is believed to be among those shot, confirmed by the school district.

The shooting took place before the school day began, likely minimizing casualties. There is no further danger to the public. The community is safe, assured Dallas County Sheriff Adam Infante.

Butler shared a disturbing TikTok video shortly before the shooting, showing himself in a school bathroom stall with the caption Now we wait. The accompanying song, Stray Bullet, contained violent lyrics.

The White House and FBI are assisting local authorities in the investigation. Chief Eric Vaughn of Perry Police Department expressed condolences to the victims and their families: They need your thoughts and prayers as well as time and space to process and to grieve.

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of school safety and mental health awareness. Our thoughts are with the Perry community during this difficult time.
