The Shia Wakf Board has proposed a ‘peace formula’ to the Supreme Court of India in an apparent attempt to find a lasting solution to the 25-year old Ayothya issue.
The Babri Masjid which existed at the disputed site at Ayodhya near the Ram Mandir was destroyed by ‘Kar Sewak’s on 06th December, 1992 during the regime of former Prime Minister Narasimha Rao. The destruction of the mosque had made things tense in many communally-sensitive States and Districts in the aftermath of the incident and triggered many riots across the country for many years.
The U.P. Shia Wakf Board has filed a petition with the apex Court stating that “We are ready to allow Hindus to build a temple for Sri Ram at Ayodhya; in return, we only demand some acres of land for construction of a mosque in Lucknow. This proposal is being mooted in the overall interest of the country and in an effort to find a peaceful, lasting solution to the 25-year long ‘Ayodhya’ row.”
Wakf Board, which had already announced donation of ‘silver arrows’ as a goodwill measure for the proposed Ram Mandir at Ayodhya, further said that Muslims in the country had understood Hindus’ sentiments about ht Mandir and they had arrived at the above-said ‘peace formula’ wherein they won’t press for allocation of land near Ram Mandir.
Political observers point out that the Board’s offer couldn’t have come at a more appropriate time as Uttar Pradesh and the rest of the country had been yearning for a lasting solution to the ‘masjid’ row for a long time now!
