Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia University wanted to confer an honorary doctorate to the King of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan for his amazing contribution in the Indian cinema and who also happens to be a star alumnus of the prestigious University. The request for the same was sent to Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry last year by Jamia for approval. But, the government has denied the request.

According to a report, the HRD Ministry has issued a statement that since Khan had already received a similar degree from the Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad in December 2016, so offering another honorary doctorate would “not be in order”.

When Higher Education Secretary R Subrahmanyam was asked for the multiple degrees, he said that no single person has been conferred with an honorary degree in more than one central university since 2014. However, there have been several cases of prominent Indian personalities including scientists CNR Rao and MS Swaminathan being conferred with multiple degrees.
