The Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi has on Saturday faced sexual harassment allegations. A female junior court assistant, aged 35, has made the allegations in a letter written to about 22 judges. As per her, Gogoi made sexual overtures to her on October 10-11 last year at his official residence.
The victim says in the letter that the CJI hugged her around her waist. He then touched her all over her body with his two arms. He then pressed his body against her. "He didn't let me go. He asked me to hold him. I literally froze," she said in the letter.
The CJI has denied the allegations. "The employee worked under me for 45 days. The allegations form a bigger plot, possibly, to deactivate the CJI office. The PMO and the office of the CJI are completely independent," he said. The employee was dismissed from the services last December after she took a one-day leave without permission.
Meanwhile, the Secretary General of the Supreme Court has described the allegations as “completely and absolutely false and scurrilous”.
