Vinay has started his career brilliantly with 'Unnale Unnale' and 'Jayamkondan'. But for some reasons or other he lost his ground and delivered three duds back to back (Modhi Vilayadu, Mirattal, and Onbadhula Guru). Vinay is someone who can easily essay any kind of commercial role which gets penned in Kollywood, but somehow he keeps finding a new roadblock to crash his journey. ‘Serndhu Polama’ is one such daring attempt from him to stoop to a new low.
It is very hard to put ‘Serndhu Polama’ in some genre, because it keeps shuttling across various genres right from its start. The movie opens up with Samuthrakani describing the Childhood life in a voice over and we get to see the lives of Vinay, Madhurima, and their friends. Vinay as Abi, who is fond of Photography and visits South Island every Summer from Auckland. From there, the movie takes various turns before talking about the psychological issues of a kid in the last few minutes. In between, we get to see some poorly scripted love angle between Vinay and Preethi, and a terrible comedy track from the National award winner, Thambi Ramaiah.
The director, Anil Kumar wanted to script so many layers within 120 minutes in the form of a road movie, a triangular love tale, and a murder mystery. But his screenplay has let him down big time. The story wanders all over New Zealand in both the halves and that is the only solace for the viewers. There was a time, where the great Goundamani has lost his momentum for a while, because of his interest towards roping a female partner in all his movies. We guess, Thambi Ramaiah is going through a similar patch, and his comedy track in this movie is nothing but sheer disgusting. The editor could have easily chopped off his portions to present a 100 minute film.
Apart from Vinay, Madhurima alone does some justice to her role and tried her best to get the lip synch right. For the rest of the people, the cameraman was clever enough to shoot from the back and added the dialogues in the dubbing right away. Sanjeev Shankar made use of New Zealand’s beauty to present a colorful tone throughout the movie. Music Director, Vishnu Mohan shines with the title track and that’s alone will be in your memory after walking out from the hall.
Verdict: 'Serndhu Polama' is a classic example of how a movie shouldn’t be made, and Vinay successfully dethroned ‘Onbadhula Guru’ and replaces this movie on his list as a tremendous dud.
