Pudhupettai, released in 2006 has been one of the most celebrated gangster movies of Indian cinema, and the raw and realistic portrayal of a gangster's life and his rise in politics with Kokki Kumar character by director Selvaraghavan has earned the movie a huge fan following.

Recently, there were special shows of the movie organised by several prominent theaters of Chennai, and the shows getting great demands proved the following and craze owned by Pudhupettai. Dhanush who played Kokki Kumar in the movie, had been to a college cultural event few days back and was asked regarding a sequel to Pudhupettai.

Usually whenever Selvaraghavan is questioned by fans on Aayirathil Oruvan 2 or Pudhupettai 2, he used to answer them that they will happen soon. However Dhanush this time answered that there are possibilities of Pudhupettai 2 definitely, and since the movie has a separate fan base, the sequel must justify the character Kokki kumar besides also stay strong as the first part. Dhanush went on to add that screenplay works are in progress for Pudhupettai 2.
