Selvaraghavan made his film debut as the scriptwriter of 'Thulluvadho Ilamai' directed by his father Kasthuri Raja. The film that boldly explored the dark pages of adolescent life turned out to be a runaway hit, but panned by critics due to its bold adult content.

With his first directorial 'Kadhal Kondein' Selvaraghavan proved to the critics that he is not a mere screenwriter hoping to cash in on an young male's attraction towards the opposite sex. He proved that he can handle love, lust, affection, anger, frustration and all other mentions with depth and unique style. The film which was a super hit and also launched his brother Dhanush as a brilliant performer was lapped up by critics as one of the best psychological thriller.

His other films '7G Rainbow Colony', 'Aadavari Mataluki Ardhale Verule' (Telugu) and 'Mayakkam Enna' are testimony to the fact that he is the master of portraying human emotions on silver screen.

Apart from these Selvaraghavan's 'Pudhupettai' a gangster flick explored the north chennai lifestyle which was seen as a rarity in those days. The film also gave a chilling account of the nexus between politicians and gangsters.

His 'Aayirathil Oruvan' the mega budget fantasy flick which traversed to the Chozha Era is still being praised by a huge section of audience. Many youngsters hail this film as the "First World Cinema" in Tamil in social media. There are quite many takers for this film who are left in awe of the grandeur in thinking as well as the making of this flick.

'Irandam Ulagam' is another bold and unusual fantasy attempt which again failed at the box office, but appreciated by a section of audience.

'Pudhupettai', 'Aayirathil Oruvan' and 'Irandaam Ulagam' are the three remarkably unique attempts by Selvaraghavan but their commercial results were highly unfavorable. But his passion to experiment has continued these years and we can be assured that it will never die down. We can expect more and more experimental films from this director.

The announcement on the shelving of his 'Kaan' with Silambarasan came as a shocking disappointment for his large fan base and also the general movie buffs last year. But he is expected to make amends for that by teaming up with the stellar performer and his younger brother Dhanush again. .

Apart from this he is presently directing a horror flick 'Nenjam Marappadhillai' with SJ Suryah as the lead. Gautham Menon is producing the film and we can expect a brilliant film as the result of the amalgamation of these three highly talented filmmakers.

Lets keep waiting for the more good news and great films from Selvaraghavan and in the meanwhile lets wish a very Happy Birthday to the filmmaker who is undoubtedly one of the highly respected among those who have emerged after the dawn of the millennium
