Vasantha Mallika Apartments in Mylapore, Chennai has managed to harvest enough rainwater to be self-sufficient. With 65 residents in 20 apartments, the daily consumption of water is about 12000 litres. While the old well provides 5000 litres of water every day, a new one which has been dug yields 9000 litres.
Though not in use for now due to potability issues, after treatment the water from the new well can be used. With several pipes connecting the terrace to percolation pits and the old well, along with pits that are covered with holed slabs, the residents of the apartments are trying to ensure that not even a single drop of rainwater will go to waste. In times where water scarcity poses a major issue in cities, the initiatives taken by the building inhabitants are commendable.
