Timely action by cops at the Office of the Tamil Nadu Director-General of Police (DGP) in Mylapore, Chennai yesterday resulted in successful thwarting of self-immolation bid by two Theni cops.
Ganesh and Raghu, cops from Theni District, met a few newspersons near the DGP’s office during when they leveled serious allegations against the Superintendent of Police, Theni District. The SP had been neglecting them on caste basis, they alleged and added that they also faced unnecessary transfers because of their caste.
“We have been transferred for no reason and were also denied our right to take leave on a circular basis,” the cops said. All of a sudden, the duo poured kerosene on themselves and attempted to self-immolate themselves. Officers and cops who were standing nearby rushed to the duo and thwarted their attempt by pouring water on them so that they are not affected by the fire from the match-stick.
The cops were later led into the DGP’s office by other cops who pacified them and advised them not to indulge in such acts in future. Panic gripped the locality after the news spread that cops attempted to commit suicide in DGP’s office. It may be recalled that cops taking their lives by way of suicide due to work-related stress and pressure from superiors has been on the rise in recent times in the State.
