'Seetimaarr' is different from previous sports-based movies: Gopichand

Ahead of the theatrical release of 'Seetimaarr' on September 10, Gopichand says that the Sampath Nandi-directed movie is different in a lot of ways. If his replies are anything to go by, the 'Jill' actor believes that the movie is pitch-perfect.
How did the project fall into place?
Sampath Nandi came to me with a story revolving around the problems facing the education system. I didn't show much interest in it. Then he narrated this story, which is based on Kabaddi. Even though there have been a couple of Kabaddi-based movies, 'Seetimaarr' is nothing like them. It blends a whole lot of commercial elements.
The movie is also your first sports-based movie. Isn't it?
Yes. It's a reason I jumped at the first opportunity. Above all, the script is topical. It talks about the issue of anti-women attitudes. While doing the movie, I got to closely observe four national players. They haven't got their due and it is painful.
Coming to the issue of women empowerment, how does the film convey its message?
Women face a lot of challenges owing to regressive attitudes. It's all in how we see. Kabaddi players have no option but to wear short clothes. The right can't be denied to women who aspire to play Kabaddi.
What is it about Kabaddi that interests you?
The sport is massy. I will be seen as a Kabaddi coach in the movie. The girls who belong to my team in the movie had to slog very hard. It was not easy for them at all. They are professional players.
There are many female characters in the movie. Tell us about that.
Tamannaah Bhatia has played a very strong character. Bhumika Chawla's portions are about sentiment. There is sister sentiment in the story. Writer-director Sampath Nandi has designed the story as a commercial one while being about the sport.
It's not just about the casting, the technical team is amazing. I have repeatedly worked with music director Mani Sharma garu. Our films have always clicked.
The movie has seen many delays. Do you endorse direct OTT releases?
'Seetimaarr' went on the floors in the last month of 2019. The delay in its release is purely due to the pandemic. Some producers prefer a direct OTT release given their financial constraints. I personally prefer to watch movies only in theatres. That said, OTT has got a lot of future. It's here to stay.
What about your upcoming movies? Is it true that you have a film lined up with Teja?
'Pakka Commercial' is my next. Maruthi garu is directing it. I will talk about it later. I have a movie lined up with director Sriwass. As for Teja's movie, nothing has happened on that front.
