Secret Tunnel Stir: Arrests and Chaos at Brooklyn Synagogue Construction

Chaos erupted at a Brooklyn synagogue on January 8 when Orthodox Jewish men tried to halt construction workers filling an illegally dug tunnel. The NYPD arrested 10 people as the dispute escalated at Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters in Crown Heights.

The tunnels were found beneath this prominent Brooklyn building, posing a threat to its foundation. Investigators revealed Yeshiva men had carried out the unauthorized construction over six months.

Tensions escalated as a cement truck arrived to fill the tunnels. Protestors at the scene reacted, tearing down the synagogue's wooden panels, leading to clashes with the NYPD.

Authorities cleared the way for the cement truck, removing wooden panels. Multiple protestors refusing to vacate the tunnel were handcuffed and taken away, as seen in viral videos on social media.

The Chabad community is outraged, demanding action. Officials are scrutinizing the structural integrity of nearby buildings. Legal disputes over the complex's ownership further complicate matters between the Chabad-Lubavitch movement and synagogue leadership.

The reason behind the tunnel’s construction remains unclear, but reports suggest it might connect to an abandoned women's ritual bath to expand the synagogue.

The NYPD spokesperson reported the disorderly incident and unlawful entry into the premises without injuries, noting that charges were pending.

Rabbi Yosef Braun condemned the men’s actions, calling it horrid and mind-boggling to demolish a Shul, expressing the pain inflicted on the community by their actions.
