The Narendra Modi government on Monday clamped down on the clones of 47 of the previously banned apps. These are variants of most of the 59 apps that were banned in June.

ANI today reported that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) has done away with Tiktok Lite, Helo Lite, SHAREit Lite, BIGO LIVE Lite and VFY Lite, among others. It may be noted that TikTok, Helo, Shareit, BIGO LIVE have already been banned.

The government found that the data registered in these apps goes back to the Chinese government.

The ban has been imposed by invoking Section 69A of the Information Technology Act. The Centre has also composed an exhaustive list of as many as 250 other apps. These are under the radar of the Centre for national security violations and data breach issues.
