Following heavy rainfall, a school building in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli region collapsed to rubble on Tuesday.

The building of Saraswati Shishu Mandir in Gopeshwar was reduced to debris following heavy rainfall and thunderstorm in the early hours. There were no casualties reported as the state administration had declared a holiday for schools in view of heavy rainfall and snow in the region on January 22.

“The western disturbance active over Jammu and Kashmir has resulted in rains in the Jammu division and the snowfall in the valley over the past 24 hours, since Monday. The system is likely to weaken from Tuesday evening and we are expecting gradual improvement from tomorrow onwards,” a MET official said.

A rescue operation is currently underway and the administration is working on removing the debris from the area.
