The much-awaited verdict of the Supreme Court of India in the Cauvery River Water dispute involving the Southern States of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala is to be pronounced in a month’s time from now, sources from the national capital report.

The Cauvery River Water Disputes Tribunal delivered its final verdict in 2007 which was challenged by separate appeals filed by the above-said States which moved the Supreme Court soon after. The apex Court had been conducting trial on the appeals at various stages during the past decade and has said on 28th September last year that its verdict would be pronounced soon.

A non-governmental organization had earlier filed a case with the Supreme Court stating that Karnataka can’t accept the river water sharing formula with other States as it needed water to fulfill Bangalore’s drinking water needs and other purposes. The case was taken up by a Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, Justice A.M. Kanvilkar and Justice Chandrachud.

Taking up the petition, the Bench observed that there had been plenty of confusions plaguing the case for the past 20 years. “Within the next four weeks i.e. 30 days, we would be pronouncing the final verdict in the case after which it is the prerogative of individuals/bodies to file cases,” the Bench said while refusing to take up the petition.
