SC tells televisions channels to air awareness programmes on ‘Blue whale’ game

The Supreme Court of India has issued an order to television channels across the country to air awareness programmes to warn and keep youths in check against indulging in life-threatening online ‘Blue whale’ game.
Ironically enough, India tops the list of countries with a heavy toll of human lives as youths and kids indulge in the killer online ‘Blue whale’ game which ultimately lead them to commit suicide to ‘complete’ the game which ‘assigns’ several tasks to them to be completed within a 50-day span. Culminating in suicide, the online game has been banned in several countries.
Those who are adventurous in nature and those living in solitude take to the games in huge numbers, which is an alarming trend. More than 100 precious have been lost in the country so far to this ‘killer’ game. N.S. Ponnaiah from Chennai had filed a public interest litigation (PIL) petition with the Supreme Court asking it to permanently ban the online game in the country so as to save precious human lives.
A Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, which took up the petition, directed Govt.-controlled as well as private television channels of all languages across the country to telecast programmes aimed at creating awareness among people about the dangers of the ‘Blue whale’ game. It also directed the Centre to set up a separate committee to censor such programmes and issued notices to the Centre to file a report within the next three weeks on action taken on its directions.
