When Nandamuri Balakrishna's 'Gautamiputra Satakarni' was released in 2017, the Andhra Pradesh government exempted the historical from Entertainment Tax. Earlier, the government had exempted the Gunashekhar-directed 'Rudhrama Devi' from taxation.
The intent behind the incentives was to pass on the benefits to consumers so that they are encouraged to watch the movie and learn about history. But the movies allegedly didn't do so, probably because there was no consensus between the producers and exhibitors. The ticket prices were not reduced in keeping with the waiving off of the Entertainment Tax. Had the benefit been passed on to the audience, the ticket rates would have cost less.
In view of the same, the Viewers' Association had moved the Supreme Court, urging it to look into the matter.
On Monday, reportedly, the apex court issued notices to some individuals. If everything goes well, the government will recover the extra amount collected by various stakeholders from the audience.
