News has just broken that K.Bhagyaraj has stepped down from the post of President of the Writers Union which he took over a few months back from Visu. He had already shared in many interviews that taking up the 'Sarkar' story theft issue had caused him trouble at home as his son Shantanu is a hardcore Vijay fan and his wife Poornima is acting in serials produced by Sun Group.

Bhagyaraj received high praise for standing his ground in support of associate director Varun Rajendran who claimed that 'Sarkar' story has been lifted from his 'Sengol' script registered in the union in 2007 itself. He went to court and A.R. Murugadoss after refuting the allegations settled the issue out of court promising to issue a letter acknowledging the similar thought that Varun had ten years back. At this juncture the resignation of Bhagyaraj from the Writers Union has shocked the Tamil film fraternity.
