Following the India Pakistan match on June 16th, Pakistan faced a lot of flak from fans about their fitness and dietary habits. One fan however crossed all limits by walking up to the Green Shirts Captain who was with his son in a mall, and asking him why he was fat like a pig. While the video led to outrage and ultimately garnered support for Sarfaraz, it was definitely not an easy period for the skipper and his family. In an interview released by ICC, he talks about his wife’s reaction to the incident.
Sarfaraz said: “When I went back to the hotel I saw my wife was crying after watching the video. I tried to explain to her that this is just one video and that we have had people walk up to us and tell things. This is nothing serious we must be strong. All of this is a part of life, when we don’t perform well we will have to go through all this.”
The captain also emphasized the role of fans saying: “I would like to thank everyone who sent me tweets and messages of support and love on social media. We are grateful to everyone. Whatever we are today is because of our fans. If our fans support us, even we will perform better and stay motivated. I have always said that our Pakistani fans love us a lot. And we also know that when we win they will give us a lot of respect and when we lose, their anger is valid because they have expectations from us.” After all the criticism, the team has bounced back and has won the last two matches against South Africa and New Zealand. Sarfaraz was also in full form with a flying catch to get Ross Taylor out in yesterday’s match. Pakistan is on the exact same track as 1992, the year in which they lifted the Cup, something that causes a little fear for fans of other teams. After yesterday's match, the 100% similarity has extended to the seventh match. A creepy coincidence or something else, we are yet to know.
