Shoojit Sircar's recently released film 'Sardar Udham' is arguably the best Hindi film to come out this year. Vicky Kaushal's insanse acting performance and Udham Singh's gut wrenching tale made the film a masterpiece. However, despite being such a well crafted film with a great theme, 'Sardar Udham' was not chosen as India's official entry for the Academy Awards for a really absurd reason.
Members of the jury felt that content of 'Sardar Udham' might be considered insensitive towards Britishers. Two members openly stated that the film relies too much on "our hatered for the British". Fans are quite outraged by these statements. Some of them took to Twitter to explain the concept of 'Sardar Udham' while others called out the hypocrisy of jury.
One user tweeted, "#SardarUdham was rejected for Oscar nomination by an “Indian” stating it has “too much hatred for British”. This film had hatred for imperialism but not for any particular race. This film was about FREEDOM and how far our revolutionaries went on, and this is what we give in return?”
An another one wrote, "So Indian kids lathered in poop, begging and fending for themselves in Slumdog Millionaire is more palatable as a representation of Indians. But a realistic depiction of the horrifying acts of British imperialism on our country is problematic? #SardarUdham”
