Director K S Ravikumar is known for churning out commercial entertainers. He has kept his reputation intact with Saravana, a remake of Telugu hit Bhadra.
Starring Silambarasan, Jothika and Prakashraj, the movie has shades of Ghilli, but good performance by Silambarasan and Jothika coupled with racy screenplay makes the movie an engrossing fare. Ravikumar deserves pat for making necessary corrections in the original script to suit the Tamil audience. A right mix of comedy, stunts and romance, Saravana is sure to click among the front-benchers.
Saravana (Silambarasan) and Krishna ('Five Star' fame Krishna) are friends. Saravana falls in love with Krishna's sister Sadhana (Jothika), who studies in London. Saravana visits the house of Krishna in Tirunelveli and comes to know about the caste clash prevalent in the district.
His good deeds appeal to Soundarapandi (Prakashraj), Krishna's elder brother, who decides to arrange for the wedding of Saravana and Sadhana, coming to know that he is in love with Sadhana.
In the caste clashes, Soundarapandi and Krishna gets killed by the opposite faction. Saravana rescues Sadhana and takes her to his home in Chennai. The rest of the story is all about how he protects her and eliminates the gang, which is behind Sadhana.
Silambarasan performs well as the soft romantic lover and also as an angry man. He excels in action sequences. His dialogue delivery is good. After a serious role in Thotti Jaya, he has enough opportunities to try his hand at romantic and humourous scenes too.
Jothika excels as Sadhana. Towards the second half, she has given a good performance. Unfortunately, the onscreen chemistry between Silambarasan and Jothika, which was prevalent in Manmadhan, is sadly missing in Saravana.
Meghna Naidu, being roped in for glamour, has nothing much to do. Vivek succeeds to evoke laughter in little opportunity that he has been given. As usual, Prakashraj performs his part with ease and elan. Krishna playing Silambarasan's friend has done a good job.
The movie has a huge star cast including Nagesh, Radharavi, Tharika, Nizhalgal Ravi.
Srikanth Deva's music is just average.
Banking heavily on Silambarasan is Saravana.
