2018 saw the release of the biopic of yesteryear Superstar Savithri as Nadigaiyar Thilagam/ Mahanati, and this year saw the release of NTR biopic on Pongal eve. After Bollywood has tried and experimented with biopics every year, has biopic trend has been slowly yet steadily catching fire in South as well, and set to join soon is Kollywood.

At the moment, there are more than 3 biopics on former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalitha being made, and all of them are in various stages. One of them, titled Iron Lady is directed by Priyadarshini, a former associate of Mysskin, and another will be directed by veteran maker Bharathiraja.

The third version, which was announced by Vibri Media will have AL Vijay directing it. The movie had been speculated to feature Vidya Balan and Sai Pallavi as Jayalalitha and Sasikala respectively, though no official confirmation had been made. However, national award winning actor Samuthirakani has confirmed in a recent media interaction that he had been approached by AL Vijay to star in the biopic, and that he has given his nod to play a surprise role.
