Saguni Review

The wait is finally over. Karthi's 'Saguni' has hit the screens. The actor is back with a bang after almost a year (His last was 'Siruthai'). A mass masala stuff, right commercial ingredients and racy political sequences make up the movie.

'Saguni' is a simple story. It boasts of a youth who uses his brain to outwit his enemies and achieves a purpose. Debutant filmmaker Shankar Dayal has conceived the events in such a way that the first half is more lighter and laughter, while the latter half has scenes that add to the suspense.  All with humour as under current.

Thanks to Karthi's awesome screen presence and Santhanam's quick wits, 'Saguni' ends up as an entertainer that provides one a jolly fun ride.

Karthi is at his best. From a quirky introduction scene, the hero in the actor slowly grows as the movie progresses. It is a Karthi with a difference. He has been seen as romantic and an action hero so far. But the complete actor in Karthi is out in 'Saguni', especially towards the second half.

He handles every tough situation with ease. The interesting mind games that Karthi plays to bail him out of tough situations help the movie sail through.

No doubt 'Saguni' does suffer from logical lapses and some cliches. But Shankar Dayal has rendered a commercial potboiler and hence one need not look into the logic. In a nutshell, it is the story of an innocent but an intelligent youth taking on corrupt politicians and how he brings in a change with his antics.

Kamalakannan aka Kamal (Karthi) comes to Chenani with a mission to save his ancestral property at Karaikudi from being demolished for constructing an overbridge.

He comes across Rajini alias Appadurai (Santhanam). They get together for an interesting journey. There is Sridevi (Pranitha), Kamal's ladylove.

Kamalakannan runs from pillar to post and finds out that all hell broke loose thanks to greedy and corrupt Chief Minister (Prakashraj).

Kamalakannan vows to bring down the Chief Minister and destroy his empire. He uses his brain and build his own castle and challenges the Chief Minister. In a bumpy ride, it's success finally for Kamalakannan. Victory for good over evil finally.

It is indeed a delight to watch Karthi. He is expressive and spontaneous. Especially in comical sequences in the company of Santhanam, Karthi excels. He has cemented his place as a commercial hero and has come a long way indeed.

Santhanam tries to bring the roof down with his humour. His one-liners are enjoyable. He fulfills the role of a sidekick which Vivek was doing all these days. Pranitha plays a typical heroine. She appears for a couple of romantic duets, sobs, smiles and disappears.

Radhika plays an interesting character while Nasser and Roja have been wasted considering their potential. Prakashraj plays the role that he did in 'Ko'. A chief Minister's role with grey shades is apparently a cake walk for him.

G V Prakash Kumar's music is enjoyable especially the pacy number 'Vellai Bambaram...' and the soft melody 'Manasellam....'

Shankar Dayal seems to have won the battle thanks to a team of strong technicians. P G Muthaiah's camera compliments the pacy script well while Sreekar Prasad's editing skills make the film look more racy.

Reminding one of Vikram starrer 'Dhool', 'Saguni' has its own moments. All in all, it's Karthi's bog ticket to super stardom. An entertainer for those who love love commercial cinema.
