Ace filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli has achieved yet another global milestone, earning a permanent place at the prestigious Cinémathèque Française in Paris, one of the world’s most respected film institutions. The honour marks a historic moment not only in Rajamouli’s career but also for Indian cinema on the international stage.
Known for taking Indian cinema to global audiences with blockbusters like Baahubali and RRR, Rajamouli has consistently redefined the scale and reach of Indian filmmaking. His latest recognition further cements his status as one of the most influential filmmakers of his generation.
Founded by legendary film archivist Henri Langlois, the Cinémathèque Française is regarded as one of the world’s foremost institutions dedicated to preserving and celebrating cinema. Over the years, it has honoured iconic filmmakers including Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, and David Fincher. Rajamouli now joins this distinguished list with a permanent place in its halls.
Adding to the significance of the occasion, Rajamouli met acclaimed Oscar-winning Greek-French filmmaker Costa-Gavras. In a remarkable tribute, Costa-Gavras reportedly watched nearly eight hours of Rajamouli’s films before attending and staying throughout the filmmaker’s masterclass, highlighting the global admiration for his work.
Expressing his gratitude, Rajamouli wrote on social media, “Having me here in Paris and screening my films is itself an honour for me. But a sweet surprise I never saw coming. To have a permanent place in the halls of one of the world’s most legendary film institutions is something I will carry with me forever. My deepest gratitude to the legendary Mr. Costa Gavras and the entire Cinémathèque Française family for embracing Indian cinema with such warmth and love.”
The honour comes as Rajamouli gears up for his next ambitious venture, Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra, and Prithviraj Sukumaran. Expected to release next year, the magnum opus is already among the most anticipated Indian films and is set to continue Rajamouli’s remarkable journey of taking Indian storytelling to audiences across the globe.
